3/14/11    LEE COUNTY SHERIFF TAKING BACK UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS APRIL 30th

[Lee County, MS] ├ On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Lee County Sheriff's Department in partnership with D.A.R.E. America and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Lee County Sheriff's Department at 510 N. Commerce Street, Tupelo, MS. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trashboth pose potential safety and health hazards.
Four days after last fall event, Congress passed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an  ultimate user of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them. The Act also allows the Attorney General to authorize long term care facilities to dispose of their residents controlled substances in certain instances. DEA has begun drafting regulations to implement the Act, a process that can take as long as 24 months. Until new regulations are in place, local law enforcement agencies like the Lee County Sheriff Department and the DEA will continue to hold prescription drug take-back events every few months.

1/12/11 Project ChildSafe Firearm Safety Kits Available

We will provide free firearm safety kits to interested Lee County residents through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide safety education program. The safety kits, which include gun locks, will be available at the sheriff''s department during normal business hours. (M-F 8am - 5pm) They should arrive within one week to our department. Feel free to contact us at 662-841-9040 to get more information.

Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), has distributed more than 35 million firearm safety kids throughout the country since 2003. The program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, with additional funding by the firearms industry.

"We encourage residents to pick up a Project ChildSafe safety kit so that they can securely store their firearm(s)," says Sheriff Jim Johnson. "Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The locks fit on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in your home."

"We are pleased to have the Lee County Sheriff''s Department as a Project ChildSafe partner," said Bill Brassard, Jr., Director of Project ChildSafe.  "Project ChildSafe is an important step forward in helping ensure that all firearm owners have the means for safe handling and storage of firearms."
